Meet the Founders

Founders Rebecca Haile and Jean Manas believed that when you nurture talent through education, you invest for the long term. Haile-Manas Academy, named after their family, took root in a former barley field—and is now home to a bold vision for Ethiopia’s future.

Dear Friends,

Our hopes of making a major contribution to education in Ethiopia began—quite literally—as a vision in a barley field. Today, that field is home to a beautiful new school: a place where motivated students from across Ethiopia learn, grow, and lead. What started as an idea is now a thriving community, one we have come to love.

We founded Ethiopia Education Initiatives because we see education as the ideal long-term investment for maximum long-term impact. Ethiopia’s greatest resource is its youth, and we believed world-class secondary education could unlock their potential.

As immigrants whose own lives have been shaped by access to extraordinary educational opportunities, including the support of countless mentors, our desire to “give back” in this way is deeply personal.

Today, we see HMA students stepping into bright futures that were once out of reach. Their capacity and determination affirm our belief:  talent truly is universal, and with the right opportunity, that talent can grow into greatness that uplifts us all.

Thank you for joining us on this journey—your support helps this vision thrive.

With gratitude,
Jean & Rebecca
